The Wiltshire town of Westbury lies close to the Westbury White Horse. Near to Westbury is Walmore Common which is now a nature reserve on the River Severn flood-plain. In the middle of the 19th century a race meeting was held on Walmore Common on land owned by Joseph Bennett. The meeting was staged on Friday 12th April 1850 and opened with a match that saw Confidence defeat Oliver. The feature race, the Walmore Stakes, was won by Mr Letecher’s Shamrock defeating Fortune Teller and Jerry. There is no further evidence of meetings taking place at Walmore. |
